From May 25th to May 27th, 2016, Saab Technologies Ltd. hosted its annual KleinPort Customer Advisory Group (CAG) meetings and Technical User Group (TUG) meetings in Vancouver, Canada. The meetings were timed to precede the International Harbour Masters Association (IHMA) 2016 Congress held in Vancouver the following week.
Many attendees commented on the benefits of collaborating with a community of experts and active users of the KleinPort system as well as sharing common business problems and solutions in the general port management arena. Throughout the events, discussions were wide ranging including cross-port communication in addition to new interfaces and features.
For the first time, both TUG and the first day of CAG were webcasted to customers who were unable to attend in-person. Saab was pleased with the online turnout, and will continue to offer and improve the webcast experience in the future.
The 2017 KleinPort Customer Advisory Group meetings are planned for Los Angeles, USA with final dates to be confirmed. “This year we had senior customer representatives from Australia, North America, and Europe; our most diverse turnout yet,” said Peter Behrendt, Saab Technologies’ Managing Director. “The engagement of the attendees and the quality of discussion was superb, giving us valuable insight into our customer’s challenges and their visions for their ports.”

Defense and security company Saab has been awarded separate contracts from the Canadian Great Lakes Pilotage Authority and the Great Lake Pilotage Division of the United States Coast Guard to upgrade their Great Lakes Pilot Management System to the latest version of Saab’s KleinPilot.
The new KleinPilot system will replace the existing Saab supplied system installed in 2006. It will be used by the two organizations and the three U.S. Great Lakes pilotage associations to manage and coordinate the dispatch of marine pilots on the Great Lakes and automatically generate billing in accordance with the applicable tariffs. Saab will host and administer the shared system on behalf of the two organizations on a secure site to ensure the confidentiality of the parties and data.
The KleinPilot is based on Saab’s state-of-the-art N-Tier management information system platform and will include the following new features and functionality: Fully web based user interface to facilitate easy user access
- Agent web portal for agents to submit pilotage requests and monitor assignment status
- Pilot web portal (and optional iPhone application) to receive assignments, record job information and submit time cards
The new system is scheduled to commence use in live production for the start of the Great Lakes navigation season in March 2017.

The U.S. Coast Guard Great Lakes Pilotage Program is a specialized program that manages the processes and procedures for the United States registered pilots on the Great Lakes.
Pilotage within the international waters of the Great Lakes is managed by the two organizations under a memorandum of arrangements between Canada and the United States.
